Long before the rise of global financial markets, before colonial powers imposed their economic frameworks, Africa was already at the centre of a sophisticated network of gold trade routes. Today, the continent remains a dominant player in global gold production, but the story of how it arrived here is a layered narrative of empire, ambition, and economic transition.
The history of African gold begins in antiquity, when powerful empires such as Ghana, Mali, and Songhai flourished across West Africa. These civilisations amassed considerable wealth from the mining and trade of gold. Gold dust and nuggets were commonly used in barter and became the primary driver of trans-Saharan trade.
The Mali Empire, under the rule of Mansa Musa in the 14th century, exemplified the continent’s wealth and influence. Musa’s pilgrimage to Mecca, during which he famously distributed so much gold that it caused inflation in Cairo, placed African gold on the map for Middle Eastern and European observers alike. These empires traded gold for salt, textiles, horses, and other goods, and their networks extended to North Africa, the Middle East, and even parts of Europe.
The arrival of European colonial powers in the 19th and early 20th centuries disrupted these indigenous systems. While Europeans were initially attracted by the potential for trade, their ambitions quickly shifted toward extraction. Colonial regimes in regions such as the Gold Coast (modern-day Ghana), South Africa, and the Congo redirected gold wealth into European coffers through mining concessions and forced labour systems.
Gold mining during this era became increasingly industrialised. Large-scale operations emerged in places like the Witwatersrand in South Africa, home to some of the richest gold veins ever discovered. While the industry brought infrastructure and global capital to the continent, it did so at great human cost. Local populations were often displaced, and mining towns were structured around racial hierarchies and economic exploitation.
Independence and the Rise of National Mining
Post-independence, African nations sought to reclaim sovereignty over their natural resources. In many cases, this meant nationalising mining operations or renegotiating terms with foreign firms. Countries like Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Tanzania made gold a central pillar of their economic development strategies, while South Africa continued to dominate the sector with large-scale industrial production.
In recent decades, gold mining has also seen the rise of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). This sector now employs millions of Africans, contributing to local economies in ways that large-scale mining often does not. However, it also presents challenges, particularly in terms of environmental impact, health and safety, and market integration.
Africa’s Role in the Global Market Today
Today, Africa supplies over 20% of the world’s gold, with countries like Ghana, South Africa, Sudan, and Mali among the top producers. While new technologies have improved efficiency and output, questions remain about value addition and equitable growth. Most African gold is still exported in raw form, with little local refining or jewellery production, meaning the real profits are often realised elsewhere.
That said, there are promising developments. New refineries are being established across the continent, and there is increasing focus on ethical sourcing, traceability, and transparency. Initiatives such as the Africa Mining Vision (AMV) aim to make mining more beneficial to African economies by promoting policies that support beneficiation, local content, and sustainable practices.
The story of gold commerce in Africa is both ancient and ongoing. From camel caravans traversing the Sahara to digital transactions between Johannesburg and Geneva, the evolution of this precious metal’s trade reflects the broader history of the continent, its triumphs, challenges, and aspirations. As Africa looks to the future, gold remains a symbol not only of wealth, but of potential, shaped by the past, but not bound by it.
