SUN
SHAMASH
3000 years ago in Mesopotamia, Shamash was the Sun God. His attendants were Kittu (truth)
and Mesharu (righteousness).
Each morning Shamash rose from behind the mountains with light radiating from his shoulders. The
symbol of Shamash was a solar disc.
Some 6000 years ago, Ra was the Egyptian Sun God - Lord of the Sky. Other Sun Gods from
ancient cultures are : Utu (Sumerian), Amaterasu (Japanese), Apollo (Greek), Lugh (Ireland),
These gods were associated with light, energy and, very often, justice.
The Roman religious followers of Mithra were wide-spread and powerful. At the centre of their belief was the
unconquerable Sun, symbolizing courage, confidence and success.
The Sun gives light and life. It is a sign for self-expression, identity and leadership.
Generally the Sun is regarded as a symbol of honorable achievement and attainment - both within the Self and amongst Humankind.
